The Terroir. Harmonique grapes are grown in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County, California. It is recognized as a world class growing area, the perfect terroir for Pinot Noir, whose potential is still being explored.
An article in the San Francisco Chronicle entitled "Bucolic Back Country creates frontline wines" stated...
"Producers have turned The Valley’s pristine cool climate grapes into honest wines. Sophisticated farming and winemaking techniques and recently developed clones from France alongside long time resident vineyards, enhance the varietal mix, making Pinot Noir The Valley’s premier wine. A perfect climate for Pinot Noir lured the French house of Champagne Roederer to the valley in the 1980's when it established Roederer Estate planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1989 the French champagne house Pomeroy acquired existing vineyards and renamed them Pacific Echo. It is no longer accurate to describe Anderson Valley Pinots as elegant, delicate wines focusing on bright red-cherry fruit and refreshing acidity. They are all of that, but now they are joined by others that offer more depth of flavor, richer, more diversely flavored fruit than ever before (thanks to new clones) and complexities that are dazzling."
The climate is ideal for this classic varietal grape, planted in well-drained hillside vineyards, bathed in the warmth of the summer sun, and cooled nightly as the Valley fills with fog from the nearby Mendocino Coast. The vineyards chosen for Harmonique reside in one of the select western-most portion of the Valley which benefits the most from this unique weather pattern.
The Grapes. The heart of greatness of any wine is the grapes. Anderson Valley offers newly available clones and those of older, mature vineyards. Harmonique includes fruit from 29-year old vines from one of the western-most vineyards in the Valley, along with fruit from the 9-year old Klindt Vineyard, which includes some of the newer clones introduced in recent years. We have handled the grapes gently: hand picking, gentle de-stemming, native yeasts, and traditional non interventional wine making.
Harmonique was aged in 70% new French Oak for 19 months, separated by vineyard and clone, and blended to result in the most elegant, complex, exciting result, then bottle aged for an additional 6 months prior to release.
The Wine. There were two bottlings of our Premier Release 2002 Vintage Anderson Valley Pinot Noir released in September 2004, The Noble One and Delicace', followed by two bottlings of the 2003 Vintage which were released in February 2006. Our current vintage is the newly-released 2005's. In 2005 we made a third bottling, Elegance', which was released in the fall of 2008. In 2007, we made 2 Chardonnays, Delicace' Chardonnay and Chardonnay Un-Oaked from 24-year old Chardonnay vines fom our own Conzelman Vineyards. These Chardonnays were released in the fall of 2008.
The Noble One: Bold, commanding, elegant
Delicace': Feminine, subtle, with finesse
Elegance': Rich, Silky and elegant with a long finish
Delicace' Chardonnay: Viscous, elegant and restrained
Chardonnay Un-Oaked: flavors of tart green apple, mineral and grass notes, lively acidity
WHO IS HARMONIQUE?
Harmonique is a joint effort between long-time Anderson Valley winemaker Robert Klindt and wine aficionado Bruce Conzelman. Over the last 19 years, Robert has established a reputation for himself as a winemaker who can get the best from the available fruit through patience and careful blending. Robert has won many accolades for his Claudia Springs Winery Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Viognier. Bruce brings to the partnership a vast knowledge and love of Pinot Noir, enjoying wines from Burgundy to Oregon to California. Recognizing the potential for Pinot Noir in the cool climate of Anderson Valley, he teamed up with Robert to produce a wine that would be on a par with any in the world. This harmony of passion and experience has proven to be successful in these two releases.
